The story of a journey that sums up the BlackGenius Canada method: an honest diagnosis, a demanding plan, regular support — and the solidarity of a community that doesn't let go.
The child: 11 years old, Grade 6 in a Montreal public school. Well-liked by his teachers, seen as "average" in math. First-term report card: 64% in math, 71% in science. The family was concerned but didn't know how to step in.
The child himself described himself as "not really good at math" — a classic self-fulfilling prophecy.
An honest academic diagnosis. A volunteer teacher from the founding WhatsApp group — the very same group that would give rise to BlackGenius Canada in 2026 — identified in two sessions that the child had a shaky grasp of three prerequisites: automated multiplication tables, long division, fractions. Not a comprehension problem: a fluency problem.
A 28-week individualized plan. 30 minutes a day, five days a week, focused on the three identified gaps. Resources shared among the group's families. A referent tutor family for when he got stuck.
A targeted competition. Preparation for Mathlon (a Canadian competition) in March, to give him a tangible goal.
